Analyzing Racing Lines in Telemetry Data

Analyzing and optimizing racing lines, the path taken by a driver through a corner or series of corners, is an essential aspect of telemetry data analysis that can lead to significant performance gains. By focusing on the entry, apex, and exit of each corner, and using telemetry data to refine your approach, you can find the ideal path that reduces lap times and enhances overall driving efficiency. With practice, feedback, and continuous analysis, mastering racing lines will become second nature, substantially improving your racing strategy and outcomes.

For most supported games, Sim Racing Telemetry provides a dedicated Racing Line View, an optimal visual tool to analyze and compare racing lines.

For all games, in Sim Racing Telemetry you use the Lap Track View to visually display over the track important telemetry parameters like the braking pressure, the throttle input, the steering angle, etc. An essential tool to quickly analyze the data.

Importance of Racing Lines

The racing line is the trajectory that allows a vehicle to maintain the highest speed through corners while minimizing the time spent off the ideal path. Mastering the racing line can lead to smoother and faster laps. Key aspects include:

  1. Entry, Apex, and Exit: These are the three critical points in corner navigation. Understanding how your telemetry data reflects your position relative to these points can help you identify whether adjustments are needed.
    1. Entry: The point where the turn begins. A wider entry might allow for a better line through the apex.
    2. Apex: The innermost point of the corner. Hitting the apex optimally allows maximum exit speed.
    3. Exit: The point where the car exits the corner, crucial for gaining speed onto the straight.
  2. Braking Zones: Study your telemetry data to see where you brake and how hard. Are you using the full potential of the brakes, or could you brake later? Analyzing these zones helps refine your line.
  3. Throttle Application: The timing and smoothness of throttle application upon exiting a corner can determine your speed down the following straight. Telemetry data can reveal habits like early throttle lift or excessive throttle mid-corner.
  4. Steering Input: Your steering angle can indicate how efficiently you're navigating the racing line. Large steering corrections might suggest that your line needs adjustment.

Analyzing Racing Lines with Telemetry

Enabling the Comparison Mode, you can further optimize your racing lines.

  1. Path Comparison: Overlay paths from different laps or compare with those of faster drivers. Look for deviations from the ideal line.
  2. Corner Analysis: Using the Delta Time charts identify corners where you lose the most time compared to a reference lap. Review your entry, apex, and exit data to adjust your approach to these sections.
  3. Consistency Checks: Consistent racing lines increase predictability and performance stability. Check for variability in your line over multiple laps.
  4. Use of Racing Line View: If available, leverage the Racing Line View to map your racing line precisely. This data provides a visual representation of your car’s path around the track.
  5. Experimentation: Use practice sessions to test different lines. Capture and analyze telemetry data for each attempt to see which line offers the best performance.

Improving Your Racing Line

  1. Visualize and Plan: Before getting on track, visualize the ideal line for each corner. Use track maps and previous data to plan your approach.
  2. Track Walks and Observations: If possible, walk virtually the track to understand its physical attributes. Observe other drivers and dissect their line for potential insights.
